On Sunday we had a chapter ride out organised by Road Crew Marshal, Andy Burns to the Cairndow Inn, supported by RC Raymond Brodie. Unfortunately, the weather had other ideas and brought in some pretty heavy rain that worsened the further west you went.
As a result the turn out was down on what had been “pre-booked” with Cairndow, which just meant more for everyone that did turn out and it gave them longer to dry their gear out before squeezing into sodden gloves and boots for the ride back.

A run in the vein of ; dry on the way out….need to dry out on the way back.
With a nasty wet and unsettled period forecast for Saturday afternoon an intrepid group led by Raymond and crewed by Fraz and Paddy, headed for Dumfries House which isn’t in Dumfries.
A great run was had by all, at least going there, and any weather related chills were dispelled by a plate of hot soup at the cafeteria of Dumfries House before the return journey through the increasingly unsettled weather and Ayrshire countryside.

A ride out wouldn’t be a ride out without something happening requiring the need for access to power tools for Fraz’s bike. Last year it was angle grinders at Gretna ( allegedly) this time round it was welders at West Coast to put back the section of Fraz’s exhaust that nearly decapitated Paddy.

The Road Crew headed out from West Coast Harley Davidson on Saturday, taking the ferry over to Hunters Quay then a meeting at the Rally site before hitting the 7 Lochs. A wee taster to whet your appetite. See you at The Gathering!
With the sun splitting the sky we had a good showing at the Bishopbriggs Community Festival Parade on May 18th with lots of Harleys and noise to keep the locals happy.

Our first Chapter Ride out of 2024 was threatened by the weather (once again ) early in the prior week, but Road Captain Connor Fitzsimmons brought the sunshine ( and his new fiancee) back with him to lead us to the entry to Glencoe on a bright dry if slightly chilly morning.
There was a fair bit of salt on the roads, especially the closer to Tyndrum you got, but with it being dry it really caused no issue that a good rinse down after the ride couldn’t solve.

The first leg of the rideout took a turnout of nearly 30 bikes from WCHD up the side of Loch Lomond to Crianlarch and on for a Burnsy fag stop, at Tyndrum.

Nicotine consumed, bladders emptied and tanks refilled ( as appropriate), another 25 minutes and the bikes arrived at the gateway to Glencoe, Kingshouse, stopping in at the hotel. Many took the time to enjoy a hot pie or a cup of homemade soup to warm up where the cold had got through.

The backdrop to the hotel is simply stunning especially on a clear day such as this with the sun dappling the sides of Buachallie Etive Mor, it looks like a painted film set and provided ample opportunity for some nice bike pics.

Saturday’s ride out was a nice wee run into the Campsies turning along the Carron Valley and arriving in glorious sunshine at the Falkirk Wheel where we were able to park up the bikes in the plaza in front of the wheel itself, which made for a nice stop off.

Connor was leading, supported by his new road crew bitch, Burnsy. Burnsy in turn was being supervised by Head Road Captain Jigger for about half the run and Lairdy returned to be last man after a long lay off as founding member of the Cult of Lairdy and the Disciples of the Dislocated Arm.

Burnsy doesn’t seem entirely convinced about his new job role as Connor’s man bitch…let me have a fag and think aboot this….Aye aw right when you put it like that….
It was a wee bit foggy over the top of the Campsies heading towards Fintry but as soon as we dropped down the north side of the fells, the sun made an appearance and pretty hot it was too.
All the bikes were parked up in a line of the Plaza at the Wheel and they attracted a fair bit of attention from both visitors and staff alike. Myself and Burnsy kept some American tourists entertained when they told us they visited the Wheel every year they visit and this was their fourth time. I had to admit though I live barely 15 minutes away I had only visited once in the last 20 years and Burnsy told them this was his first time!
After Connor left to go play with his oval balls ( rugby ), the rest of us just generally milled about, drinking coffee, eating ice cream and watching the wheel go round and round. All very pleasant and civilized. Good too, to see some of the less regulars out with us as well this weekend.

2023 was the 25th running of Thunder in the Glens and it would be rude for CVH not to be there. A sizable contingent of Clyde Valley began making their way to Aviemore on Thursday but we still had a good-sized group riding up on the Chapter ride to Thunder from West Coast HD.

Led by Jigger around 17 bikes left WCHD at 11:30 in what were pretty changeable conditions. It actually started quite dry, but was mostly wet with torrential rain around the Stepps bypass heading out on the M80 and, as ever past …what’s it called?…. Cumbernauld.
Cumbernauld folk have evolved to have webbed feet and lay their eggs in puddles and ponds each spring. Probably.

The group arrived safely at Stirling where we picked up around another 10 or so bikes for the next leg up to Pitlochry. This also provided an opportunity for one rider to lose their keys down the leg of their knickers.

As always the sun was shining as we parked up at the Blair Atholl Distillery and grabbed a sandwich. Davie Fulton had nipped down from Thunder to meet us and join us for the ride back up. (maybe not the best move as the weather got progressively worse over the last 50 miles of the trip- but he don’t care… Probably).
Suitably checked in at Thunder we met up at the Winking Owl…supposedly for a photo but the weather (utterly persisting down) and later arrival of some meant others had drifted away and that kind of never happened. There were smurfs though.

After a wet Friday night it was pretty much raining stair rods again most of Saturday for the mass ride out to Grantown on Spey via Lochindorb. If you had done it before, in the conditions, many would have went….”nah, not this time”, but if you have never done the ride out then it was a case of why let rain spoil the fun. Around 900-1000 riders were of the latter view and it made for a spectacular sight leaving Aviemore. Quite a few CVH members joined the ride joined by some who rode up for the day as well. Then there was the Ladies of Harley event…staying classy as we knew you would . Probably.

As usual, there was plenty of entertainment both official and unofficial in the various venues that line the Aviemore “strip”.
Sunday started a bit more variable with showery conditions which did initially worsen but then by early afternoon it was actually quite bright and dare I say, sunny. The Sunday ride out to Cairngorm while a smaller affair than Saturday’s ride, was actually very well attended, I am tempted to suggest there were more bikes this year than last year, and someone needs to explain to me the bone-dry couple of miles at the head of Loch Morlich heading up to the hill ( which was merely moist as well). It got wetter the closer to Aviemore High Street you went ( official: scientifically proven study conducted by me) until early afternoon when it all cleared up.

Sunday night had some great entertainment with top British Rock band Massive Wagons leading the way, followed by the rally finale led by the Rick Parfitt Junior Band singing all the usual covers and getting the audience involved.

A final post script: Clyde Valley HOG wish to convey our best wishes to Dunedin Chapter Director Stewart Willox and his partner Kerry who were involved in a rather nasty RTA on the Flying Fortress on Monday while heading to Grantown to get fuel. Apparently, the car driver that hit them pulling out of a junction didn’t see them… how can you miss seeing a huge Harley painted like an American flag on a highland road….? Speedy recovery to you both!

After what has been a shaky month weather wise and no end in sight to the unsettled conditions this months Chapter ride out was planned for a run to Oban. As the week developed it looked fortuitous that Sunday was the day for the run, it being a Chapter run, as Saturday looked to be a stinker. But in point of fact, Saturday ended up not bad and Sunday was actually a very nice day for a run into the near North West.
A few riders got a wee sprinkle of weather on the way home but a lot depended on where your final destination was and what route back was taken.
The group of about 16 ( 14 bikes and 1 trike) went up via Loch Lomondside and Tarbert taking the road to Crianlarich and then for a stop at the Green Welly to let Burnsy get a fag and petrol….preferably not all at the same time….

As the carnage and mushroom cloud of the ensuing explosion faded in the riders mirrors it was on to Oban to stop and revive with Chips/Ice Cream/Coffee….again preferably not all at the same time.

The return trip was really up to each individual and where they were headed, but the majority took a run down the Kilmartin road to Lochgilphead ( another fuel stop) then back around Loch Fyne. Some headed back via Dunoon and the Ferry to the Clyde Coast, others took the more direct routes. It might have rained at Dunbarton….. and on the Clyde Coast, but a small price to pay for a nice day out.

A busy weekend for Clyde Valley HOG and first up was a ride out to Dunbar over on the East Coast to support the RNLI Gala day. A couple of bikes from Dunedin also attended and the weather stayed somewhat miraculously dry for the most part, with what appears to have been a small shower just as the bikes were departing for home. While the weather has been changeable this last month most of the ride outs have been able to dodge the weather and ended up with good conditions so sometimes its worth taking a chance and just coming along, more often than not we get away with it. Scottish Festival of Motoring 2023
Sunday we had another posse of bikes and members heading east once again, this time early on Sunday morning to show our bikes at Ingleston showground and the Scottish Festival of Motoring.
Again, it sounds that despite the outside pitch at the event, the weather stayed dry all day.

Saturday’s ride out was a fully circular route out the north side of Glasgow through Kirkintilloch and Kilsyth, Denny then out to Carron Bridge and along the Carron Valley to Fintry where we stopped at the Courtyard Cafe, at Knockraich Farm ( a wee gem of a find by Paul the Road Captain for the day, if I do say so myself*).
*this route is a regular route for your humble scribe as it’s all local to me and nice roads but never have I even noticed the cafe! Doh!
One wee mention too for the road from Fankerton out to Carron Bridge. If you have ridden it at all in the last three years at least you can’t be unaware that it was like the surface of the moon all potholes and craters and really quite dangerous… not now it is lovely billiard table smooth grippy tarmac!
The road down into Fintry as it exits the Carron Valley road however is still a bit of a pothole fest from about the Fintry Loup ( the waterfall) to the junction of the Campsies road ( Fintry- Lennoxtown) so be aware.
The weather had somewhat changeable ideas but by some miracle ( a miracle that eluded your humble scribe on the way down to Glasgow when we had to shelter from the torrent in Stirling Services with lots of other motorbikes), it stayed dry despite threatening for the entire ride out. In fact it was incredibly hot and sitting outside at the Courtyard was very pleasant indeed….and the scones were good too.
